Members of the UoC Forum 'Ethnicity as a Political Resource'

The UoC Forum 'Ethnicity as a Political Resource' consists of nine researchers, including senior and junior scholars based at the Departments of Cultural and Social Anthropology, Iberian and Latin-American History, and African Studies of the University of Cologne.

All UoC scholars involved in this project and their international partners have worked extensively on historical and contemporary processes of ethnic formation and on the related subjects of indigeneity, autochthony, nationalism, social movements, transnational mobility, and transregional connections.

Our multidisciplinary composition allows us, both a diachronic approach to investigate trajectories of emerging ethnic groups and ethnicity-based politics in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Europe; and a comparative perspective to elicit regional and historical differences and similarities.

We believe the Forum is making a substantial contribution towards strengthening the interdisciplinary and international dialogue on the formation of ethnic identities and their use as a political resource by enabling exchange via regular meetings, communication on a shared electronic platform, international workshops, collaborative research, and joint publications. By bringing expertise from different world regions and different research traditions into dialogue, the project will not only pool existing resources but also pave the way for novel integrative approaches.
